Fly Girls
During WWII, more than 1,000 women signed up to fly with the U.S. military. The Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPS) test-piloted aircraft, ferried planes, and logged 60 million miles in the air; 36 died in service. Then politics and resentment stepped in, and the opportunity for women to play a critical role in the war effort came to a halt. Drawing on archival footage, home movies, and interviews, seen on public television's The American Experience, this program tells the fascinating and mostly forgotten story of the women who fought a daily-and sometimes deadly-battle for respect. CC; color and B&W; 56 min.
