The Harry Smith Project: Anthology of American Folk Music, Revisited
Listeners of A Prairie Home Companion know the homespun purity, the historic significance and the cultural influence of early 20th century American folk music.
One huge reason we can still enjoy and draw from this heritage is the work of the late renowned musicologist, filmmaker and painter, Harry Smith. In 1952, Smith culled his immense collection of blues, old-time country, Cajun, and gospel 78s to create the groundbreaking Anthology Of American Folk Music. This collection contained original recordings issued between 1927 and 1932—the short period when companies were issuing these records.
In 1999, veteran producer Hal Willner launched a series of concerts in a tribute to Smith's preservation of American folk forms. Willner put together an eclectic group of contemporary musicians to cover this same music and now, this incredible 2-CD/2-DVD box set has captured those performances, featuring Nick Cave, Elvis Costello, Steve Earle, Lou Reed, Wilco and others.
The box set includes a documentary—not available anywhere else—about Smith's work to preserve this priceless music.
